Space Hardware Design and Industrialisation Engineer (m/f/d)

Spaceopal is the prime service operations contractor for the European Galileo Satellite Navigation System and manages all Galileo Service Operations. The awarded European Commission (EC) contract to Spaceopal is more than just its satellites in space. Galileo Service Operations will provide high-quality positioning, navigation and timing services to users across the whole world as a civil-controlled service with guaranteed continuity of coverage.

The Space Hardware Design and Industrialisation Engineer (hereafter abbreviated as “SHDIE”) is a role for a versatile and hands-on electronics engineer, requested to shape the hardware evolution and industrialisation of the Spaceopal innovative, state-of-the-art, real-time, onboard Orbit Determination and Time Synchronisation product for LEO satellites.

The position is an engineering role with substantial technical ownership and coordination responsibilities, rather than a personnel-management role.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain and evolve the product's electronic architecture, schematics, PCB design and electrical interfaces.
• Define and implement hardware updates, component changes and customer-driven interface adaptations.
• Review power, digital, analogue, RF and timing circuits and support hardware bring-up and troubleshooting.
• Assess the impact of design changes, component obsolescence and supply-chain constraints.
• Support component selection, derating, radiation considerations and EEE parts control in coordination with product assurance.
• Translate findings from verification, qualification and customer integration into robust design improvements
• Responsibilities related to the Industrialisation and production stage:
  1. Define and implement the industrialisation approach for repeatable production of flight units
  2. Apply design-for-manufacture, design-for-assembly and design-for-test principles
  3. Establish the manufacturing and assembly flow together with production partners
  4. Technically coordinate manufacturers, suppliers and industrial subcontractors, including review of their processes and deliverables
  5. Support make-or-buy decisions, production-readiness activities and the resolution of manufacturing non-conformances
  6. Identify opportunities to improve manufacturability, quality, recurring cost and delivery time
• Further aspects of the role:
• Proactive contribution to technology roadmaps for the adoption of new processes and technologies
• Identification of the most appropriate lifecycle and methodologies, such as Agile, SAFe or others

• University degree in electrical, electronic, telecommunications, aerospace or industrial engineering, or a related discipline.
• A practical understanding of manufacturing, configuration control, component lifecycle and supplier coordination
• Experience or a strong interest in electronic hardware design, development or industrialisation
• Fluent written and spoken English.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work with multidisciplinary teams, suppliers and subcontractors in English.

The following skills are not mandatory but will be considered a distinct advantage:

• Experience with space electronics, ECSS standards, EEE components, product assurance, qualification or low-volume high-reliability production would be beneficial
• Knowledge and practical experience with Agile methodologies and the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe).
